Kinlochleven
is a quiet secluded village at the head of Loch Leven;
visitors will find that for 80 years aluminium has been
smelted here due to the abundant source of water running
off the mountains. The smelting works are now gone,
however visitors can find the story of the smelters
and the growing community in the village visitors centre.
Kinlochleven
has long been recognised as a resting place on Scotland’s
first long distance walk, The West Highland way, a 95
mile walk from Glasgow to Fort William passing through
some of the most stunning scenery in Scotland. Tigh
na Cheo lies just a few minutes walk from the route.
The
Mamore hills just to the north provide excellent walking
and climbing routes and just 5 miles to the west is
the famous Glencoe, scene of the infamous massacre of
the clan McDonald in 1692. Those wishing to take to
the hills will find many quality Munros and Britain’s
longest high level ridge, Aonach Eagach. |
